Adopt-A-Lot!

As a way to contribute to the vibrancy and resiliency of the Minot community, the Minot Park District and Minot Young Professionals are teaming up with the City of Minot and AmeriCorps VISTAs to design and implement an Adopt-A-Lot program.  An Adopt-A-Lot program is a very simple concept: organizations or businesses in the community commit to caring for vacant land in their neighborhood, which in turn reduces crime, increases property values, reduces upkeep costs for the City of Minot, and improves the appearance of our community.

Who can participate?

Businesses, community groups, and organizations can participate in the Adopt-A-Lot Program by adopting and caring for a lot or providing sponsorship dollars.  To date, Xcel Energy Foundation has provided dollars for the implementation of the Adopt-A-Lot program to help offset the cost of organizations wishing to participate, and other sponsorship opportunities are still available.  Those adopting a lot would be responsible for caring for the property between May 1, 2017 and September 30, 2017.

Where are the lots?

Ten vacant lots alongside the Souris River on the 1500 and 1600 blocks of Burdick Expressway East have been specifically targeted and set aside by the City of Minot as the lots to be utilized for Adopt-A-Lot’s inaugural year.  Adequate parking along the side streets is available for those participating in the program.  Typical lot size available to be adopted will be 20’X20’.

How can the lots be utilized?

Adopted lots can be utilized for a variety of purposes that align with bettering or giving back to our community.  Some suggested uses include community gardens, passive parks, and community art.  All adopted lots must be maintained in a timely manner.  Because the lots are in the future green space, trees cannot be planted nor can permanent, insurable structures be built - everything on the lot must be movable.  Lots adopted through the Adopt-A-Lot program cannot be utilized for individual use or individual gain.

Who do I contact for more information?

To sign up to participate or inquire about sponsorship opportunities, interested parties can contact Megan Laudenschlager (Minot Young Professionals) at megan@strengthennd.com or Elly DesLauriers (Minot Park District) at elly@minotparks.com.

Magic 60

YP hosts Magic 60 on Thursday, May 25th at the Central Campus Auditorium from 5:30-7:30pm.

The premise of Magic 60 is that community members are asked to think of projects that add to the quality of life in Minot and present them to a judging panel. The only caveat: All presentations must be made in sixty seconds or less.

“At the Community Foundation, we are always looking for new ways to engage the community in giving back. Magic 60 will be a truly unique event for Minot and another way to capture the ideas of others,” stated Ken Kitzman, President of the Minot Area Community Foundation.

Magic 60 will provide funding in the following focus areas:

- Arts, Culture, and Creativity

- Basic human needs

- Education

- Other charitable purposes and intents

Community members are encouraged to submit project ideas that run the gamete, from community art and music projects to events and charity programs. A panel of community members will judge each project throughout the event and make funding decisions before the event concludes.

To submit an idea for a project and to pitch it at the Magic 60 event, community members should submit a description of their idea (no more than 150 words) to MinotNDYP@gmail.com by May 19th.
